10 years behind the lens of professionalism: APP celebrates a decade with a look to the future

Bulgaria host the European Qualifications of the Federation of European Professional Photographers

On March 26, 2026, the Association of Professional Photographers (APP) marks its 10th anniversary, reaching a decade in which photography in Bulgaria has not only evolved, but has also found a clearer voice, higher standards, and stronger protection.

The anniversary comes with another significant announcement: Bulgaria will host the European Qualifications of the Federation of European Professional Photographers (FEP).

APP was founded on March 26, 2016, with a clear mission – to unite the professional community, protect copyright, and develop the photographic environment in Bulgaria. Today, it is a recognized force both nationally and internationally.

The Chairwoman of the Association is Liliya Yotova—a professional photographer with over 20 years of experience, PhD in Economics in the field of “Intellectual Property in the Creative Industries,” member of international juries, and one of the founders of the organization.

The Board brings together prominent professionals with diverse experience:

  • Evgeni Dimitrov – owner of Bulphoto Agency and co-founder of APP;
  • Oleg Popov – an iconic figure in photojournalism, with 22 years at Reuters and coverage of major military conflicts between 1991 and 2011;
  • Solomon Frances – an established fashion and advertising photographer, recipient of awards such as “Golden Needle” and “Photographer of the Year”;
  • Dimitar Kalinovski – professional photographer and co-founder of the association.

Among the association’s key achievements are:

  • launching educational and public initiatives to improve copyright awareness and professional skills;
  • building partnerships with international organizations and participating in global photography networks;
  • organizing and participating in exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad, including the international project “Ancient Traditions and Customs of Bulgaria,” presented in numerous European cities;
  • APP’s acceptance as a full member of the Federation of European Professional Photographers—making it the only official representative of Bulgaria;
  • active involvement in copyright protection through participation in legislative processes, drafting policy statements, and working with institutions;
  • organizing conferences, training sessions, and campaigns on topics such as ethical shooting and professional practice;
  • supporting members through international certifications, jury participation, and community development;
  • recognition of the photographer as an author and mandatory crediting when images are used.

Bulgarian photography on the European stage

In 2025, association member Yuliy Vasilev won two first prizes at the FEP Awards—recognition that placed Bulgaria firmly on the map of contemporary photography.

In 2026, Bulgarian photographers are once again nominated for the awards, which will take place in April in Reykjavik, Iceland—further proof of the high level and visibility of Bulgarian authors.

Nine Bulgarian photographers, members of APP, have achieved the first-level EP (European Photographer) certification, and one has reached the second level QEP (Qualified European Photographer). This number is expected to grow.

Representatives of the association actively participate in the international jury of the FEP Awards, as well as in the Federation’s working groups, including the key copyright group.

At the same time, APP is building strategic partnerships, including collaboration with the German Photo Union, which actively works on topics such as copyright and artificial intelligence – issues that will shape the future of the profession.

Sofia as a new hub for European photography

One of the key highlights of the anniversary year will take place in June 2026, when Bulgaria hosts the European Qualifications of the Federation of European Professional Photographers.

The event will be held in Sofia from June 12 to 15, and will bring together photographers from across Europe, whose submissions will be evaluated by an international jury.

The Federation unites over 50,000 professionals from 23 countries and maintains three certification levels — European Photographer (EP), Qualified European Photographer (QEP), and MQEP (Master QEP), recognised as marks of professionalism, technical excellence, and artistic vision.

Applications for the first level are submitted online, while higher levels require the presentation of printed photographic panels evaluated on-site.

The host of the event will be United Bulgarian Bank (UBB), providing a dedicated space on the 24th floor with a panoramic view of Sofia—a setting that combines professionalism and inspiration.

The qualifications will be accompanied by masterclasses, seminars, and professional meetings, turning Bulgaria into a focal point for the exchange of ideas and experience within the photographic community.
